Hi all,
There was a lot to unpack in this week’s announcement of the GOTY edition of Hitman - new storyline, new maps, return of Elusive Targets, themed Escalations, new costumes, etc.
Here, I’m breaking out a side area to discuss something that people aren’t much talking about but which has been much requested and will surely have a huge impact once the dust settles - changes to user-generated contracts mode.
Per this week’s release:
‘Trending’ helps you find the most popular contracts, making sure you can easily find a new challenge. We’re also adding 10 ‘Conditions’ that will add huge depth to Contracts Mode, such as restricting disguise changes or requiring players to use a specific exit. Anyone who creates a contract will be able to toggle these conditions to set a more defined challenge for their contract.
This is potentially a huge change for the game. For one thing, it could make all previously created contracts seem ancient and redundant.
I’m not sure yet what the ‘conditions’ will be, but I’m hoping one will be marking a specific character as being not killable/must protect. I’m also hoping ‘unsuppressed weapons only’ will be an option.
Restricting disguise changes could be great also. I often create suit only runs, only to see people change into a disguise, run into an area, KO the target and drop a breach charge/duck, run back to the suit, change, detonate and exit. This should hopefully cut down on that (meaning that if the objective says kill the hackers suit only with a machete, you have to get the machete and get to the hackers suit only, forreal!)
I also think forced exits could be interesting too. Making the speedboat the only exit in Paris, or the car in Landslide, means forcing a whole new route on people.
Of course, too many restrictions make a contract not fun to play - there are already too many speed-run contracts that are built backwards, designed around a specific route of less than a minute, rather than with open-ended play in mind. And similarly, I have made contracts that are too hard and too specific which people basically can’t do and just get frustrated. (see: Santa’s Long Italian Weekend). Nevertheless, I’m sure creators will find a balance.
What are you hoping to see in the new contracts mode?
